SFFSat 16/2/13

This is my snippet this week for SFFSat. SFFSat is a place where a number of authors post snippets from their written works, and give the opportunity for comments, support and encouragement. Please also explore the other blogs that are part of this set - you can find the information here.

This week my snippet is from Sorrel Snowbound, which will be the sequel to Sorrel in Scarlet.  My hope is to publish it some time around the end of April. In this sequence, Sorrel is remembering a planning meeting, where a group of people were trying to decide how to protect a neighbouring city.

I should have kept my trap shut then. If I had, maybe Wrack would still be here. But as usual I opened my big mouth. “The lloruk won’t bypass the city to pursue the evacuees if there’s a fighting force in the city. We can hold the graalur for a few days before the city falls, give time for everyone to get to Tolgrail and prepare there. With the extra numbers, Tolgrail can be held. All we need is a small force to hold Daryan for a week or so.”
I wish I had a five-bell coin for every time I had said something that dumb. I’d have enough to pay for a permanent gag.

As always, all comments gratefully welcomed!

Love those last two lines--very witty, Peter.

  2. Coulda, woulda, shoulda - you can feel Sorrel's self-anger loud and clear.

    1. Unusual for Sorrel to be angry with herself, but this time she is - I'm glad it comes across!

    1. Most people would say that she has a very bad attitude - she has a tendency to speak first and think later. Usually much later. ;-)

  4. Nice tension building. And haven't we all be in that situation before. I'd be a five-bell millionaire. Great snippet!

    1. Thanks - and you're not the only one who'd be rich (assuming bells can be used as currency here!)

  5. Kicking yourself for past mistakes doesn't save a city, Sorrel.

I appreciate the realistic reaction he gives.

    1. As always, she meant well, but it doesn't help her mood when things go horribly wrong.

  6. Sounds like Sorrel has a chronic case of foot-in-the-mouth.

    1. Absolutely! Speak first, put brain into gear after it's too late...

  7. Nice snippet. Builds up on the anger and leaves me wanting more. What happened?

    1. She lost her dragon - the enemy captured him. She is not a happy pilot... More to follow next time.

  8. Ah, but Sorrel's a true hero. She won't let harm come to the evacuees without a fight.

    1. Quite so - and when Sorrel fights, the opposition usually have a bad time.

  9. Ha, great last line. But I bet even if she did have a permanent gag, she'd still put her foot in it. :D

  10. She has to be good at something - putting her foot in it comes pretty high on her list of abilities...
